I painted this ‘dragon fruit’ for the sheer pleasure of the deep magenta peel, which appears almost fluorescent, and the sharp contrast with the speckled creamy flesh.
A pitaya is the fruit of cactus species indigenous to southern Mexico and along the Pacific coasts of Guatemala, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. The trees are sculptural and striking.
Pitaya is now cultivated in throughout Asia, the United States, the Caribbean, Australia and in tropical and subtropical regions.
The flowers bloom overnight and usually wilt by the evening. They rely on nocturnal pollinators such as bats or moths for fertilization.
